Red-crowned cranes at the Zhalong Nature Reserve

The Zalong Nature Reserve, located in the Songhua Nen river plain of Heilongjiang district, is the largest wetland reserve in China. It is located about 30 kilometers from Qiqihar, in the west of Heilongjiang.

The reserve is established in 1979. The 2,100 square kilometer marshland is a major migratory route for birds from the Arctic migrating to South East Asia.

Its ponds and reeds make it an ideal home for over 300 different species of birds and the reserve is protected by the Chinese government.
